Your campervan is more than just a vehicle. It’s also a temporary home and a base for all of your adventures. Regular self-checks can help to keep it ready for anything, but an annual service will provide the highest level of reassurance.
Servicing will not only cover what’s going on under the bonnet, but also the habitation areas of your vehicle. If you only use your campervan once in a while, you might not be aware that the electrics are faulty until it’s too late and you’re fumbling around in the dark trying to find your phone.
With a specialist campervan service, you can rest assured that all components are working as they should, so your van will always be ready for your next adventure.
Why Regular Campervan Servicing is Essential
Long gaps between use, particularly in the winter months, could leave your campervan looking a little worse for wear. To make sure all of the components are functioning correctly, an annual service is essential.
It’s also helpful to catch small issues before they become much more damaging. For example, you might not notice a small issue with a window seal at first, but leaving this until there is extensive water ingress could lead to very expensive repairs.
We explain what’s included with a campervan service and why it’s so important in this short video:
What Does a Campervan Service Include?
A campervan service is unlike a typical vehicle service, because it doesn’t only focus on the engine. It also focuses on the habitation area of the vehicle, including:
- Gas connections
- Water connections
- Electrics
- Pop top canvas and mechanism
- Body mechanics
We’ll also check things like window and door seals to ensure your campervan is watertight and ready for whatever the British weather can throw at it.
A campervan service also includes a gas safety certificate, so you can feel confident that your gas installation is safe and ready to use.
Does a Campervan Service Include Repairs?
A campervan service wouldn’t typically include repairs, but any required and recommended repairs or modifications will be raised during the service. Catching issues early can often help to avoid more expensive repairs further down the line, particularly when it comes to electric issues and waterproofing.
The only repair included as standard with the Platinum Wave Automotive campervan service is the pop top canvas cleaning. Keeping the canvas portion clear and free from dirt and debris build up can help to avoid damage to the canvas that could lead to water ingress.
Does a Service Include a Habitation Check?
Not all campervan services will include a habitation check, but we do. At Platinum Wave Automotive, we include habitation checks as part of your vehicle service so you can feel confident that all parts of your campervan are ready for action.
There’s nothing worse than arriving at a camp site late at night only to discover that your gas hookup doesn’t work and you can’t heat up dinner.
Alongside our habitation check, we can also support campervan upgrades, if you’re not happy with your current provisions. Upgrading a campervan is not just a great way to get more out of your camping experiences, but it’s also a great way to boost the value of your vehicle, particularly when you choose an experienced installer for your upgrades.
How Often Should You Service Your Campervan?
We recommend DIY monthly checks to ensure everything is working as it should, alongside an annual check by a professional. This will help to prevent common campervan issues, including electric issues, faulty gas appliances, moisture ingress, damp and mildew.
Recommended Mileage and Annual Service Intervals
If your campervan gets a lot of mileage, you might choose to invest in a campervan service more frequently. Common advice is that you should book a service every year, or every 10,000 to 15,000 miles.
Pre-Summer and Winterisation Checks
It’s also a great idea to book a campervan service at specific times of the year, such as before winter if you aren’t planning to use your campervan for the season. You might also consider a service if you haven’t used your vehicle for a long time and want to make sure everything is safe and functional.
You can create your own routine for pre-summer and winterisation checks, or you can schedule your campervan service for this time to help simplify the process.
Do Campervans Need an MOT Every Year?
Remember that a campervan service is different to an MOT, which is a legal requirement for all vehicles over 3 years of age. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need to book your MOT based on the vehicle’s registration date, not the date it was converted into a campervan.
How Much Does it Cost to Get a Campervan Serviced?
Our campervan service starts at just £300, and this includes a gas safety certificate which is valid for a year. It also includes a pop top cleaning, to help keep your canvas pop top looking great and functioning with ease.
Can you Service a Campervan Yourself?
We don’t recommend a DIY service due to the high stakes. Without training to spot the early signs of damage, you might miss issues that a qualified professional would pick up. We work with campervans every day, and we’re well-versed in spotting the common signs of damage before it becomes more widespread and costly to fix.
Which Campervan Repairs can I do Myself?
We recommend sticking to cosmetic repairs, such as deep cleaning the interiors or replacing window blinds. For more complex and technical tasks like gas installations, electrical work or structural maintenance, you should always leave these tasks to a professional.
Where can I get my Camper Professionally Serviced?
We’re pleased to offer comprehensive campervan servicing, including habitation servicing, from our base in Coventry. We’re conveniently located for Midlands residents looking for a full campervan service. We’ll complete your service while you wait, so you can sit back and relax with a coffee in our customer lounge.
